Christmas is over and as we’re taking down the decorations, I thought it would be fun to talk about some winter decorating ideas. How do you decorate for winter? Winter can seem dull and long. We need to find ways to give our home a “winter coat” and coziness as we decorate for the next couple months. Here are 12 winter decorating ideas that show some of the ways I have found that work for me when transitioning out of the holidays.
Use Winter Items In New Ways
Don’t put everything away, and think outside the box when it comes to decorating for winter. Use cozy knit clothing items such as mittens, hats and scarves. Keep out, ice skates, vintage snow sleds, and skis to extend the winter season, and add charm to your home.

Play up on Winter White and Sparkle
Winter white and textures are so soothing and warm, and fun to play up on for this time of year. I love these tin cans wrapped up with burlap and embellished with jewelry pieces. You can click over to Fox Hollow Cottage to see how she filled these recycled and decorated tin cans with pretty flowers.
Add Living Green Plants
Since the winter months can seem dark and dim, its nice to add in fresh green living plants. They not only clean our air we breath, but they bring so much life and take the place of all the greens that have been taken down, and fill in the voids of blank space.
Add Plump Soft Layers

Layering the bed with fluffy down comforters and extra blankets, is a sure way to enjoy this season. Throw on a mix of pillows for that downy feel. Why not infuse some bright and fun patterns also? Be sure to add a comfy throw to the foot of the bed for those winter naps!
Don’t Abandon The Outdoor Greens

Natural elements help bring the outdoors in, and add the freshness that we crave in the winter. Why not decorate with more fresh outdoor greens, winter berries, fruits, and branches? These work throughout the winter months. You can also spray paint some bare branches white and throw them in a vase. Fill urns and window boxes with greens until you can plant for spring.
Reinvent The Holiday Wreath

You can still use wreaths in winter. Take a look at your holiday wreaths and see what you can do to make them work for the winter. Take off holiday bows and balls and add other items. Here you can see the use of natural elements, such as fruit and flowers for beautiful texture and color.
Add Bright Punches Of Color

This is a great cure for the winter blahs. Do you have a favorite color that brings you happiness? Why not bring it into your home for this season? Color has a great effect on us, and can create a happy mood. Add color in simple ways, through accent pillows, throws, and small decor items. It will be sure to bring cheer to any dark long winter day!
Add Soft Texture And Layers

Layer on warm covers everywhere. Use blankets and quilts for table coverings, and again layer different soft items on furniture and in a comfortable sitting area. Its all about texture for this season, so have fun with it. Be sure to add a plushy area rug to keep the tootsies warm!
Add Warm Lighting

Use small accent lamps for warm lighting. Lighting is one of those secret weapons that can create ambiance when placed correctly and in areas that we tend to sit and read or chat during the winter months.
Keep The Fires Burning
Nothing says winter like the warmth of a fire or wood stove. Even if you don’t have one of those things, you can create great warm glow and ambiance with candles. Candles in winter scents are lovely to add to the home at this time of year. I personally light candles every day, and love what it adds to our home. It feeds the senses for the entire family.
Create Cozy Spaces
This is the perfect time of year to nestle in with a good book, write in your journal, and knit a new throw blanket. Why not create a sitting area that is uniquely for you? Find a plump chair and add a lamp and a place for your favorite books to stack up beside you. Enjoy this quieter time of year.
Rearrange Seating To Encourage Family Fun
Rearrange furniture to promote more conversation, game time, and family gatherings. Pull furniture from the walls, and arrange in ways that encourage interaction with one another. Stack up the board games, and plan for movie nights. This is a simple trick that costs no money and yet makes us feel like something new is happening around the house and gets our family engaged.
Have fun coming up with new winter decorating ideas, and enjoy this quieter season. Do you have any ideas that you use for decorating during this transitional season? I would love to hear all about them!

Lovely!
EEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I love all these ideas!
I do still have my “Christmas” decor up. It is white and silver and green and sparkly and it is more like winter decor than “Christmas” decor.
I love the rearrange the seating idea, and punches of color idea!
Will do!
