Eye Spy Color {Let’s Decorate With It}

When we decide to decorate, we usually go to the store and begin to pick out a collection of items all put on display by the big box stores or our favorite decorating catalog.

However, sometimes I like to play eye spy with color and expand my horizons and perspective.

We can find inspiring palettes and textures in all kinds of unexpected ways.  I thought it would be fun to chat about easy ways to combine colors, find palletes, and dream of new color themes for our homes!

Color Palettes Found In New Ways

I love the playful pattern and colors within this simple gift bag that one of my little guys decided to pull over his head!  The combination of colors makes a great color story that would work well in a room of our house.

Sometimes a large plethora of colors all in one big rainbow works, as does my Fiestaware collection.  I love to use these dishes every day and they add a fun and exciting element to our kitchen and dining experience in our home. The power of color used in bold ways can have a great impact in more ways than one.

Food is a fantastic way to see new color combinations and can be a perfect lesson in color theory!

Imagine these two simplistic bowls translated into a glossy painted pieces of furniture.  Perhaps a sunny yellow chair or a candy apple red dresser? So inspiring!

This throw is a favorite item in my home.  A beautiful lesson in combining all colors within a seasonal palette such as these are “autumn colors” married together to create a warm, inviting textile that makes you want to wrap up and get cozy.  If these same colors are used in the right way they can make a room seem like a warm hug all over.

My old barn and picket fence sitting askew, brings a great representation of weathered wood and the natural subdued palettes of barn wood and old picket sticks! This could be transferred to a coffee table or rough wood door. More of a vintage and earthy combination.

The fluffy warm yellow frosting on this cake contrasted with the pink, makes for a sweet and delightful feminine color combination.  What a perfect inspiration for a room filled with creamy ruffled curtains, a pink bedspread and warm glowing chandelier!

Nature’s palette always speaks for itself.  Every flower, branch and tree, can be a perfect color story to use in your home. God is the perfect artist that brings out colors in nature that even we couldn’t dream up!

Mixing up patterns and colors within textiles can jump start the inspiration for an entire room or house.  All it takes is a swatch of fabric to inspire.  Once you find the one piece that you love, let all your colors be pulled from that and run with it.

The freshness of one single color paired with white is timeless.  It’s fresh, crisp, simple and always a winner.  You really can’t go wrong here.  Metals work well to enhance and bring reflection and interest.

Dont be afraid to mix all shades of a color and then vary the textures.  This lesson in color should be used in any room we decorate.  Be sure to mix it up to add interest.

When you find a color you love, why not duplicate it?  Use it throughout as an accent to make a strong statement. In this case one of these vases would not have the impact that three has.

I love to think about reflection in a room.  Glass, mirrors, shiny objects and lighting can play an integral part in making any color story that much better.

Look around and play a little eye spy where ever you go.  You just may find something unexpected!

  1. I loved getting to see glimpses into your home and life. The throw blanket was beautiful. And the cake!!! Ugh, I shouldn’t have come here hungry ;P

  2. Love the barn shot – looks a whole lot like my sister’s barn in IL. BTW…any ideas on repurposing items to use in a bathroom to hang jewelry, etc, on? She’s looking for some help with that (her farmhouse is probably 100 years old and I LOVE IT).
