Cottage Style Guide :: Day #10 – Create Cozy Spaces

Cottage homes are fun to explore because you never know what you’ll discover next. Perhaps you’ll stumble upon a beautiful window seat where you least expected it or maybe you’ll fall in love with the built-in banquette in the charming cottage kitchen. There are so many fun and interesting ways to add cottage charm to your home with cozy nooks, banquette seating, or custom built shelving and storage areas.

If your house doesn’t have the architecture to allow for built ins, then you can create cozy spaces anywhere in your house!

Small spaces in the home can be utilized to the fullest by customizing the space for a purpose. For example, add hidden storage underneath a window seat. Add custom size bookshelves in that nook that serves no purpose currently. You’ll love the charm and uniqueness that built-ins bring to your cottage home.

Banquettes are an excellent way to save on space and maximize your seating area in a smaller eat-in kitchen, breakfast nook or dining room. Don’t underestimate the impact a built-in banquette could have on your patio or deck area too.

Custom shelving is the perfect way to use up every available nook and cranny in your home, giving it a purpose. Utilize the space under the staircase to create uniquely shaped shelving and an interesting display area.

Cozy Nook Ideas

  • Transform any space from an attic, slanted ceiling and all, into a cozy reading nook or bedroom space for a child.
  • You can create a cozy space in a corner of a living room or kitchen.  With some creativity you can achieve a relaxing nook with the addition of a built-in bookshelf, a small table, lamp, and chaise or simply the correct furniture arrangement.
  • Add built-in shelving and cabinets on either side of the fireplace.

Think dual-purpose as you look around your home to find places where you can create cozy nooks. Don’t overlook any space, even if it appears at first glance to be useless. You can transform it!

  1. So lovely Miss Denise! :) I LOVE the colors and mismatched patterns so much. They make me smile… I’m working in my brain as to how I can incorporate life and fun into my new home soon! ~ Love from Maine, Amy

  2. Love your ideas. They are cozy but fresh and not country. Trying to turn my office, using my grandmother’s Betty Cupboard as a desk, into a cottage guest room/office. Hope it comes together as nicely as yours do.
